Description
Elevate your Thanksgiving spread with this rich and savory turkey gravy recipe, perfect for any feast.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups turkey drippings (or chicken broth)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
- 1 cup turkey or chicken stock
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh herbs (such as thyme and rosemary, optional)
- 1/4 cup butter
- Celery (optional)
- Bay leaf (optional)
- A splash of apple cider or cranberry juice (optional)
Instructions
- Start by collecting your turkey drippings. After roasting your turkey, pour the drippings from the roasting pan into a measuring cup. Let it sit for a few minutes, then skim off excess fat if desired.
- Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Add about 1/4 cup of butter. Once melted, toss in the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté them for about five minutes until they’re soft and fragrant.
- After sautéing, sprinkle in the flour, whisking it continuously. It should form a thick paste or roux that turns a light golden hue.
- Gradually pour in your turkey drippings and stock while whisking vigorously to prevent lumps from forming.
- Once fully incorporated, bring the mixture to a simmer. It’ll thicken over the next few minutes.
- Taste your gravy and add salt, pepper, and any herbs you’d like; adjust the consistency as needed.
Notes
For a healthier alternative, use whole wheat flour or mushroom broth for a vegan version. Leftover gravy can be refrigerated or frozen for future use.
