Description
A classic German Apple Pie featuring a buttery, flaky crust and a sweet-tart apple filling, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- For the crust:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 6–8 tbsp ice water
- For the filling:
- 6 cups apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- Optional toppings:
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- ¼ cup caramel sauce
- Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Then, add the chilled, cubed butter. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Incorporate the ice water gradually, stirring until the dough begins to form. You may not need all of the water.
- Shape the dough into a ball, divide it in half, and flatten each half into a disk. Wrap them in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). While waiting, prepare the apple filling. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until well combined.
- Roll out one disk of dough on a floured surface to fit your pie plate. Place it in the plate and trim excess dough. Pour the apple mixture into the crust, spreading it evenly.
- For the top crust, roll out the second disk and gently lay it over the apple filling. You can create slits for a lattice design or cover it entirely.
- To add brilliance, brush the top crust with a little beaten egg for a golden finish. Sprinkle a bit of sugar over the crust for extra sparkle.
- Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Allow the pie to cool for about 20 minutes before slicing.
Notes
For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with coconut oil. To lighten up the recipe, use whole wheat flour and a sugar substitute.
