Description
A delightful casserole that combines the comforting flavors of traditional French toast with the convenience of a baked dish, perfect for brunches or holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of French bread (stale works best for soaking)
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups of milk (whole milk or a dairy-free alternative)
- 1 cup of heavy cream (or substitute with coconut cream for a dairy-free option)
- 1 cup of pure maple syrup (or agave syrup)
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- Optional toppings: fresh berries, powdered sugar, whipped cream, or nuts
- Optional: Beef bacon, Turkey bacon, or Chicken bacon for a savory touch
Instructions
- Start by slicing your French bread into 1-inch cubes. If your bread isn’t stale, you can leave the cubes out for a couple of hours to dry out slightly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
- Place the bread cubes in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Pour the egg mixture over the bread evenly, pressing down gently with a spatula.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Uncover the casserole and bake for about 45-50 minutes.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For a vegan option, use almond milk and replace eggs with flaxseed meal. For gluten-free, use gluten-free bread.
